Steven F. Weiss, FAIA

Steve Weiss is the principal and founder of Weiss Architects. Steve serves as principal designer of WA’s projects and provides oversight management for all of our endeavors. Steve’s designs incorporate functional pragmatism with a particular emphasis on structure and materiality.

Steve studied architecture and city planning at the Illinois Institute of Technology (Bachelor of Architecture, 1973). He is a Registered Architect in Illinois, has been registered in 23 other states and holds an NCARB Certificate. He was previously associated with Booth & Nagle, Booth Nagle & Hartray, Booth/Hansen Associates (1972-1983) and Solomon Cordwell Buenz & Associates where he was a Principal from 1983 – 1998.

Steve was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1995. He served as the president of AIA Chicago in 1990 and as a member of the National AIA Contract Documents Committee from 1988 to 2017. He was involved in drafting A201-1997 and A201-2007, the B-2017 series of Owner-Architect Agreements and many of the digital practice documents. He was Chair of the Documents Committee in 1992 and 1993 and Chaired the Digital Practice Committee and the Electronic Documents Task Force.

In addition to his design practice, Steve speaks regularly around the country on the practice of architecture and the workings of the construction industry. He also serves as a construction arbitrator under auspices of the American Arbitration Association and was an AIA representative on the AAA National Construction Dispute Resolution Committee. He serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Mies van der Rohe Society and sits on the Board of Advisors of the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology and on the Code of Standard Practices Committee of the American Institute of Steel Construction.
